The Altar God
Sumi Ink, Color Pencil, Acrylic, Toner Transfer of Found Images, 2015

This piece, set up to look like the traditional Wiccan altar, is essentially a collage of images found through the Commons on Flickr, a gathering place for public domain images. Turning these Easter-themed pieces of art from vintage housewife magazines and pamphlets into something esoteric and occult was great fun; ultimately, the purpose of this altar set-up is something those housewives would have wished for themselves, things like fertility, flexibility, and survival in a stressful, anti-woman environment. The only difference is the initiative the woman pictured here has in taking these matters into her own hands by casting magic.
